Movement and cognition are inextricably linked. The young child learns through movement. In this workshop, we will explore the link between movement and the child's mind and look at how we can prepare the environment to support this aspect of the child's development through the Practical Life area of the Montessori prepared environment. Participants will engage in hands-on demonstrations of Practical Life activities including activities for Care of the Self and Care of the Environment; and each will have the opportunity to make a Montessori-inspired Practical Life activity.
In this hands-on workshop, we will first explore the theory behind the Montessori sensorial approach to education as we learn how to support the child's development through the manipulation of concrete materials before introducing abstract concepts. In the second half of the workshop, we will engage in demonstrations on the use of some Montessori materials that support the refinement of the five senses as well as the stereognostic sense, and participants will make a child-appropriate activity to take away.
In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the Montessori approach enriching the child's development through creative activities like art and music, looking at ways to develop the child's appreciation for music and art.
